“I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well.”
- Alexander the Great

Pamela VanAuken

I was born and raised in Southern California during a time when you could drive one hour to the west and enjoy the beach, or one hour to the north and enjoy the mountains. Times have changed, orange groves and farmland have made way for homes and shopping centers, and that one hour drive has become two or three hours. So, when a U.S. Forest Service Fleet Maintenance reorganization led to a promotion opportunity in Redding for my husband Bill, we decided to pack up our belongings and our cat, Honey Boy, and leave the crowds and smog behind.

We’ve lived in Redding for almost 10 years now and love it! HoneyBoy is no longer with us, but we now have 2 Millville cats who run our household. Ellie was rescued from a tree in the quad and Rosie was adopted from one of our Millville families. This will be my 9th year teaching middle school here at Millville School. My how time flies! Before coming to Millville, I taught for 7+ years at Victoria Elementary in San Bernardino. Prior to becoming a teacher, I worked as a Forensic Toxicologist and Clinical Laboratory Scientist for 10 years. Years of working holidays, weekends, and evening shifts in addition to laboratory buyouts and closures led me to pursue my other passion - teaching.

In our spare time, my husband and I enjoy camping, hiking, fishing and bike riding. My summer gardening hobby has now become a year round endeavor. I love experimenting with new varieties of plants and I’m starting to save my own seeds! Veggies rule!! I also try to make time for swimming, sewing, quilting, card making, and preserving all those fresh vegetables.
